Jersey Ontario Hosts: Choosing Jerseys to Deal with Heat Stress

Breed Choice Affects Response to Heat Stress, Eric Baumann, M.Sc., Jersey Ontario

Heat stress can cause decreases in milk production and increases in days open. It is an increasing challenge for dairy farmers as the length and intensity of summer heat waves increase. While there has been limited research done on how different breeds cope with heat stress, data published over the last 60 years gives some clues as to how different breeds cope with heat stress. Jersey cows have a higher surface area to mass ratio than Holsteins and increase their respiration rate more during heat stress. Jerseys appear to be more heat tolerant and exhibit smaller decreases in production during times of heat stress, making the breed an interesting choice as farmers face increasing global temperatures.

Eric Baumann works on his family’s Jersey farm new Brockville, Ontario.  In 2011, he received his B.Sc., with a major in Animal Science, from McGill University. He continued his studies at Laval University with with Dr. Rachel Gervais, researching milk odd- and branched-chain fatty acids and factors that affect them. He received his M.Sc. in 2014. Eric now sits as a representative on the Genetic Evaluation Board for CDN.”

Bruno Bouchard, Director of Precision Ag division, JLD-Lague Group

Bruno Bouchard, graduated in agricultural engineering from Laval University in 1994, has always been involved in agriculture since a young age. For the last 22 years, he has been actively involved in the development and integration of new precision farming technologies for producers in Eastern Canada. He is a pioneer in the field and his vision of the integration of technologies is focused on the efficiency and profitability of farms supported by unparalleled technical service.

Since 2006, Bruno has been in charge of the Precision Ag division, an integral part of the JLD-Lagu Group, which specializes in the characterization, sale, start-up and support of documentation, guidance and automated driving technologies, variable rate control, surface and sub-surface water management, as well as the integration of precision electronic equipment for profitable solutions to agricultural customers in Eastern Canada.

Stephan May – Welch LLP Mergers and Acquisitions

Stephan May, MBA, is the Managing Director of WelchGroup Consulting. He brings years of experience in M&A, debt capital, private equity, advisory and restructuring services. Stephan works with companies to maximize their value and ensure a smooth transition process, whether through buying or selling the company, financing or restructuring. Prior to WelchGroup, Stephan held roles as the Managing Director of a boutique finance advisory firm and the Director of Corporate Development for a technology Company where he was responsible for all corporate development, which included, M&A, partnerships, and corporate finance. In 2012/13, the Company grew by way of acquisition, winning the title of “Fastest Growing Company” in Ottawa two years in a row.

Stephan is a regular guest speaker at Telfer School of Business and Sprott Business School. He is also the Chair of an International Corporate Finance Group, and sits on various boards.  In 2015, Stephan was a recipient of the Top 40 under 40 award.

Cody Sorenson – Welch LLP Mergers and Acquisitions

Cody joined WelchGroup Consulting following a role as a business banker at a Big Six bank. He is a recent graduate of the Queen’s Smith School of Business MBA program and earned his Bachelor of Commerce in Economics at the University of Guelph. Prior to his career in finance, Cody spent seven years competing as a member of the National Bobsleigh Team and competed in the Sochi Olympics in 2014.

Kathy Byvelds – Partner at Collins Barrow

Kathy acts as both a tax and client service partner providing business advisory services for owner managed business including personal and corporate tax planning, corporate reorganizations and estate and succession planning. Kathy has practiced in Eastern Ontario throughout her entire career.

Collins Barrow WCM LLP has 4 offices located in Winchester, Morrisburg, Carleton Place and Cobden.  Agricultural clients make up a large portion of the firms practice.

Kathy has been a guest speaker at previous OMAF (Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food) Farm Tax & Business Seminars for Professional Advisors presented in Kemptville.  She has also spoke at various bank seminars and local agriculture groups such as the Ontario Grain Farmers on a number of tax related topics such as organizational structures, succession of the family farm, estate and tax planning and current issue in tax.

James Kinkaid – Portfolio Manager, RBC Dominion Securities

Partner of the Menard Kinkaid team, James specializes in portfolio management and strategic planning for both individuals, corporate, and NGO clients. He provides his clients with on-going advice to build sound investment portfolio strategies.

A finance graduate of the University of Ottawa, James founded and co-founded multiple businesses in the technology sector prior to becoming an investment advisor. This diverse background gives him a unique perspective on, and approach to, money management.

James joined RBC Dominion Securities in 2006 and has since obtained his Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation. He has also been accredited as a Portfolio Manager and a Certified Investment Manager (CIM).

He has been recognized by his selection to the RBC Dominion Securities Director’s Council. James also currently serves as the Chair of the Ottawa Community Loan Fund (OCLF), a not-for-profit organization that provides character-based lending.
